Kano, Nigeria – The Kano State Ministry of Health and the Kano State Primary Healthcare Management Board(KNPHCMB),  in collaboration with the Natview Foundation for Technology Innovation (NFTI) and key development partners, unveiled the Kano State Operational Data Diagnostics Assessment Report yesterday at the Bristol Palace Hotel, Farm Centre, Kano.

The comprehensive 297-page report, the result of 12 months of meticulous research, collaboration, and dedication, provides an in-depth analysis of Kano’s healthcare system across five critical domains: Human Resources for Health, Service Availability and Readiness, Supply Chain Management, Healthcare Financing, and Data Management.

During his keynote address, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, the Kano State Commissioner for Health, described the report as a transformative tool. “From the summary report presentation, I can see that the consultants did a great job. It is great to have data for us to be able to plan adequately; it will also inform us of where we are and get us to our desired destination. It is a very timely document and I can assure you that the document will be thoroughly looked into and analyzed, to develop a well-informed plan for the health sector.”

Dr. Yusuf also highlighted the state’s ongoing efforts to improve health service delivery, including a review of the state’s Human Resources for Health policy and strategic plan. He commended all partners involved in the diagnostic review and pledged the state’s commitment to implementing its recommendations.

The report highlights systemic challenges, including workforce shortages, service disparities, and inefficiencies in supply chain management, while proposing practical solutions such as improved data integration, enhanced financial governance, and strategic workforce planning.

In his goodwill message, Dr. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, Statistician-General of the Kano Bureau of Statistics, emphasized the importance of data in driving development. He assured stakeholders that his office would support the application of data-driven strategies across MDAs and commended the thoroughness of the diagnostic review. While speaking, he mentioned, “Since the commencement of this project earlier this year, we have witnessed remarkable progress across MDAs, including the Kano State Bureau of Statistics.”

The representative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Dr. Yusuf Yusufari, acknowledged Kano State as a priority partner, describing the report as critical baseline data for future support and engagement. He reiterated the BMGF’s commitment to transforming the state’s health system.

In his opening remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Kano State Ministry of Health, Pharm. Aminu Bashir, commended NFTI for doing rigorous work on the project, checking meticulously the accuracy of data generated during the assessment. He stressed the need for state-owned data to tell its story.

During the event, the Strategic Health Policy Adviser, NFTI, Dr. Amona Baloni (former Health Commissioner, Kaduna State), presented the key findings, the methodology adopted, and recommendations from the report based on desk reviews, landscape assessments, key informant interviews, and validation sessions. She thanked the leadership of the health sector for the support and urged the stakeholders to read the full report and use it as a road map to improve data processes in Kano State.

The Co-Project Director, Dr. Ismail Jubril, who is the CEO of HCM and a key partner in the project implementation, spoke extensively on the Human Resource for Health domain of the project. He commended the state for its HRHMIS and discussed areas for improvement.

Another key highlight of the event was a panel discussion, moderated by the Executive Director of NFTI and the project’s director, Mr. Nuradeen Maidoki, featuring Pharm. Aminu Bashir, Permanent Secretary, Kano Ministry of Health; Bello Dandago, Supply Chain Management expert; Dr. Ismail, Human Resources for Health specialist; and Mr. Tochukwu Innocent, Data Management expert. The session engaged participants in discussions about implementing the recommendations, with thoughtful questions and actionable answers exchanged.

The Kano State Government pledged to prioritize actionable solutions from the report and work closely with development partners to mobilize resources. The dissemination event marks the beginning of broader efforts to implement findings and improve healthcare delivery statewide.
