In an effort to bolster the operational data infrastructure in Kano State, NFTI facilitated a comprehensive Process Review/Performance Mapping Workshop spanning four days. The workshop focused on understanding how operational data can enhance performance management perspectives and leveraged experiences from similar initiatives in Kaduna and Gombe States to address strategic questions regarding facility readiness and health outcomes in Kano.

The primary objective of the workshop was to gain insights into the public health data ecosystem in Kano State, encompassing existing data sources, governance models, collection methods, and reporting mechanisms. Through engaging stakeholders and mapping out data architectures, the workshop aimed to identify gaps, obstacles, and bottlenecks around operational data, assess data completeness and interoperability, and analyze data governance practices.

The workshop brought together a diverse team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) and key stakeholders from Kano, Gombe, and Kaduna, including strategic health policy advisors, program directors, and specialists in healthcare financing, supply chain management, human resources for health, and data management. With their collective expertise, the participants delved into developing comprehensive schematic workflows, mapping out performance metrics, and identifying relevant data points across various thematic domains within the health sector.

The workshop sessions were structured to facilitate open, interactive discussions, enabling decision-makers to generate actionable insights and inform evidence-based decision-making processes. Through a combination of overview presentations, interactive sessions, and group exercises, participants explored performance management frameworks, validated process workflows, and identified opportunities for improvement in data collection, processing, and reporting workflows.

Moving forward, the insights and recommendations generated from the workshop will serve as a roadmap for enhancing operational data systems in Kano State, promoting data-driven decision-making, and ultimately improving health outcomes for the state’s residents.
