Monday marked a significant milestone in the journey towards strengthening healthcare data systems in Kano State as Natview Foundation for Technology Innovation (NFTI) convened a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) and key informant interviews for the Kano Operational Data Diagnostic Assessment Project. This crucial meeting brought together key stakeholders from the Kano State Primary Health Care Management Board to deliberate on strategies aimed at enhancing the operational data system in the state.

The main objective of this assessment, as highlighted by Nuraddeen Maidoki, Executive Director of NFTI, is to evaluate the existing Primary Health Care (PHC) data ecosystem in Kano State. This encompasses understanding existing data sources, governance models, collection processes, management practices, and utilization of data for evidence-based decision-making.

In his opening address, the Honourable Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, represented by Director General, Dr. Nasiru Mahmoud, emphasized the timeliness of the project, noting the government’s commitment to data quality improvement, human capital development, and infrastructure in the health sector. He expressed confidence that the project, upon its completion, will significantly contribute to strengthening the government’s efforts in healthcare.

The Director of Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation, who also heads the coordination for the project, described it as timely and essential for enhancing the data operational system in the state. He highlighted the project’s potential to assist in planning, management, and other government activities related to healthcare.

During the meeting, stakeholders were grouped into four domains: service availability & readiness, supply chain management, Human Resources for Health, and Healthcare Financing. Questionnaires were administered to each group to gather input, which will guide future engagements and discussions.

Overall, the assessment framework aims to identify gaps, obstacles, and bottlenecks hindering efficient data management; assess data quality, accuracy, and completeness; analyze interoperability and integration of PHC data systems; evaluate data governance practices and policies; and engage stakeholders to understand their PHC data needs, challenges, and expectations.

The event took place at the BON Hotel, Kano, and marked a crucial step towards harnessing the transformative power of data to strengthen healthcare systems in Kano State. Natview Foundation remains committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders to drive positive change and improve healthcare outcomes for all.
